Long Range Plan

The Long Range Plan (LRP) is the core document of the transportation planning process, and it serves to guide all federally-funded investments for planning programs and capital projects for the region’s surface transportation system. Issues and opportunities identified within the LRP are pursued through execution of A/GFTC’s Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP)and Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Federal transportation legislation requires MPOs like A/GFTC to update the LRP every four years. This allows the opportunity to refine data collection and reassess our goals, progress, and include emerging trends in the region. The Long Range Plan for 2030 was adopted by the Policy Committee on January 27, 2010. It contains demographic and survey summaries, infrastructure and condition inventories, goals, objectives, and planning principles, and a financial forecast. Significant public input, consultation with resource agencies, and committee involvement were also used to prepare the LRP.

It is anticipated that A/GFTC will be asked to program approximately $1 billion dollars in capital and planning resources between now and 2030. Forecasts suggest that this total will not be enough to even keep up with the maintenance of infrastructure. The core challenge of our process will be implementing improvements in the face of overwhelming maintenance needs.
